Our Purpose and Vision

Literacy InterActives embraces diverse and inclusive literacies used in today’s world, including: 

• Literacy of the written word – understanding how the ability to read and write affects our view of the world.
• Literacy of the spoken word – understanding how oral traditions affect our views of culture and history.
• Literacy of the built environment – understanding vernacular architecture and its significance in the community. 
• Literacy of place – understanding the effect of climate, local geographies, and resources for the economic development of culture and history.

With the preservation of the Parker Sydnor Historic Site as the founding motivation, we view the cabin, its history, and its former inhabitants’ stories, as a starting point for developing exciting approaches that will enable us to better understand and improve our beloved communities and neighborhoods.
Based in Clarksville, Virginia, Literacy InterActives is particularly focused on sharing familiarity with the African American experience in Virginia’s Southside region and connecting that vital history and culture to the future of Southside and other communities in Virginia and beyond.
