Literacy InterActives was founded in 2007 in Southside Virginia as a nonprofit organization connecting education, culture, public history, and technology as inclusive ways for promoting interactive literacy practices in the 21st century and bridging communities in Virginia.
In 2007, Angelita Reyes, PhD, founded Literacy InterActives (LIA) as a way to honor her ancestors. Since then, LIA has won national awards for programming, and the Sydnor Cabin was named a top 10 most endangered historic site by Preservation Virginia in 2022.
Our board of directors includes linked descendants from the Prestwould plantation (near the Sydnor cabin), public history and preservation professionals, and Southside Virginia community members. We meet annually in Clarksville to celebrate the community.
