In May 2024, Literacy InterActives - in partnership with Preservation Virginia - was awarded a $258,000 grant from the African American Civil Rights grant program to preserve and rehabilitate the Sydnor cabin. This funding, administered by the National Park Service through the Historic Preservation Fund, will include engineering and architectural services and complete building stabilization and rehabilitation. This is a major victory for LIA, and preservation work will begin in spring 2025.
LIA has been recognized repeatedly for innovative programming and developing resources that preserve and share African American history in rural Southside.
Preservation Virginia added the Parker Sydnor Cabin site to its annual listing of the “Ten Most Endangered Historic Sites” in Virginia in 2022. (See press release, pp. 12-13)
